First Impression: Doesn’t expand much further beyond High School Physical Education classes.
In their book, Empowered: The Complete Guide to Women’s Fitness and Nutrition, Diana Trotman attempts to cover the topic in four short chapters. The journey starts with an overview of women’s health to include information about female physiology, hormones, and metabolism. It also debunks common myths. It leads on to discuss how to craft a workout based on the individual’s aims, followed by a chapter on nutrition, and finishing with a quick run-down on different ways to view body and how best to develop a healthy attitude towards our bodies.
As a serial reader and reviewer, I express my gratitude to Diana Trotman for the gifted copy of her book that has enabled me to be able to provide yet another honest review in exchange.
Reading the factual information was extremely quick. The book is written in short, simple sentences. The rhythm was very staccato i.e., choppy. Devoid of character, the text lacks imagination in its structure and provides a tone akin to AI voices. (That’s not to claim that the book is produced by AI, only that the text lacks buoyancy). The text is also repetitive. With the pages being so short (approx. 130 words), it feels excessive reading about the need for nutrients, or that women’s bodies are different. It also feels like there is a section missing. Whilst the book includes information about carving out a workout, it repeats several times that a mixture of strength training, cardio, yoga and pilates are good for providing variety and prevent boredom with the routine. Overall, anyone that paid attention in physical education classes is not likely to discover anything particularly new and insightful.
The book has a few noticeable spelling and grammatical errors, although not so many that they affect readability, e.g., ‘A; ways,’ ‘Consistency is vital when working out, so finding a routine that can easily maintain is crucial,’ and ‘You can take help from a fitness professional to design a program specifically for you’.
The book is probably most suited to someone fairly young looking to motivate themselves into working out. The book serves as an introduction to the topic of fitness but falls short in not suggesting any exercises and the purpose for doing specific ones. It could have been beneficial to have a beginner versus an advance plan, or even some recipe ideas. At $25.00 for a paperback edition in the US, it’s not for me, but the book is available to Kindle Unlimited subscribers for $15.00. That said, the book is starting to gain traction on Amazon and there are readers showing a great appeciation for this text by voting it 5 stars. I guess this is one of those divisive books you will just need to judge for yourself.
